The Traffic Sign Method to Portion Control [Holiday Edition]

Need a little help with portion control this holiday? Here’s a very simple way to keep up with your portion control guidelines. All you have to remember is your traffic light signs.

1.Green LightGet 2 servings of a non-starchy vegetable. 

Examples of Non-starchy vegetables

  • Broccoli
  • Cucumber
  • Okra
  • Carrots

2. Yellow LightGet 1 serving of a starchy vegetable or grain (bread products). 

Examples of starchy vegetables are:

  • Peas
  • Corn
  • Lettuce
  • Green Beans
  • Potatoes

3. Red Light: Get 1 serving of a meat or meat-substitute.

  • Turkey
  • Ham
  • Vegetarian Substitute

 

So, a Thanksgiving meal would like this:

Non-Starchy Vegetable: Green Beans & Yams

Starchy Vegetable/Grain: Biscuit

Protein: Turkey

 

or like this:

Non-Starchy Vegetable: Serving of Sweet Potato Souffle (or try our Sweet Potato Puff) & Green Beans

Starchy Vegetable/Grain: Dinner roll

Protein: Ham
